The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP) assesses the amount and extent of California’s forests and rangelands, analyzes their conditions and identifies alternative management and policy guidelines. GIS Mapping and Data Analytics In the State of California, the health and risk factors associated with forest and rangelands are a matter of utmost importance. The Fire and Resource Assessment Program is committed to providing the highest quality spatial data, maps, and online data viewers to provide critical information that can help safeguard these vital resources. View Our Maps Assessment Reports Conducted every seven years, the Forest and Rangeland Assessment links together state requirements for natural resource inventories and strategies, and the federal government’s desire to rely more heavily on these state programs in determining priorities for funding. View the Reports Forest Health Research Program Grants FRAP supports scientific studies that provide critical information and tools to forest landowners, resource agencies, fire management organizations and policy makers across California on a variety of topics related to forest health and management. Fire Perimeters The Fire and Resource Assessment Program compiles and provides Natural Hazard Disclosure maps and data for two types of fire hazard areas referred to in legislation as disclosure items in real estate transactions. Forest Inventory and Analysis FRAP participates in the national FIA program. The inventory samples all forested lands in the US, regardless of ownership and management objectives. Data collected by the FIA program captures and quantifies tree growth, removal, and mortality. Forest Fuels and Species Conservation FRAP is dedicated to coordinating forest fuels reduction and species conservation issues. Treatment Monitoring CAL FIRE proposes to significantly increase the pace and scale of forest restoration and prescribed fire by 2030. The increase in prescribed fire foreseen for California ecosystems over the coming decades represents a fundamental shift in vegetation management strategy and policy. Forest Carbon Monitoring FRAP develops an ann ual Forest Ecosystem and Harvested Wood Product Carbon inventory. This inventory assists the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection in assessing whether the state’s forest carbon sequestration target is being met.
